A butt splice joins two conductors end to end. It is a practical choice when a wire is damaged, needs to be lengthened or must be repaired without changing the rest of the harness. Both wires should be the correct size for the splice barrel, stripped to the intended length and inserted fully before crimping.
Choose the insulation and sealing level for the location. A basic insulated splice can be suitable in a protected dry area. For exposed vehicle, marine or outdoor work, a heat-shrink or sealed connection may be the better fit when the connector system and installation method support the required protection. Do not rely on electrical tape alone to turn a non-sealed splice into a sealed repair.

Quick-disconnect terminals: blades, tabs and service access
Quick-disconnect terminals are designed to mate with a matching male or female blade. They are common on switches, relays, lamps, accessories and serviceable electrical components. They make removal efficient, but that convenience depends on a positive fit between the terminal and the mating tab.
Confirm the blade width and thickness, terminal gender, insulation clearance and expected current before choosing a disconnect. A loose female receptacle can create resistance and heat, especially in a vibrating application. If the mating tab is burned, loose or damaged, replacing only the wire terminal may not correct the problem. Inspect both sides of the connection.
Pin terminals, ferrules and connector contacts
Some wiring jobs do not end at a stud or blade. Pin terminals and ferrules organize stranded conductors for terminal blocks or clamp-style connections, while connector contacts are inserted into a matching housing. These parts are system-specific. The contact profile, cavity size, seal, terminal gender, wire range and locking feature must match the connector family.

A terminal that fits a battery stud but is not sized for the conductor or current path is not a suitable substitute.
Copper lugs, tin-plated lugs, battery terminals and heavy-duty splices each have a different role.
